Ehud, a left-handed Israelite, was chosen to deliver tribute to the oppressive Moabite king. Crafting a concealed dagger and strapping it to his right thigh—exploiting the assumption that weapons would only be checked on the left side—Ehud approached Eglon under the guise of diplomacy. Once alone with the king, Ehud claimed to have a secret message from God. Eglon dismissed his guards, and in a swift move, Ehud plunged the dagger deep into the king’s belly, so deep that the handle disappeared into his fat. This act marked the turning point in Israel’s liberation from Moabite rule, leading to a surprise attack by the Israelites and securing eighty years of peace.
