What is the meaning of Eucharist in the Catholic Church? • The Greek origin of the word Eucharist is eucharistia, which means thanksgiving. • The term comes from the Last Supper when Jesus took the bread, broke it, and gave thanks (eucharistia) saying, This is my body, which is given up for you. • When we celebrate the Mass, we recall all we have to be thankful for as a human race and as individual people. We thank God for his creation, his redemption, and his presence in our lives. We thank God for all the good things he has given to us. We are grateful, especially, for the gift of God's Son and the life that Jesus sacrificed forus. • The term Eucharist is used to refer to the bread and wine that become Christ's true body and blood of Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, which the Church has called the source and summit of Christian life. • The Eucharist is the heart and the summit of the Church's life, for in it Christ associates his Church and all her members with his sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once for all on the cross to his Father; by this sacrifice he pours out the graces of salvation on his Body which is the Church.
