TE Lawrence (1888 – 1935), remembered by Hollywood in Peter O’Toole’s dramatic portrayal as Lawrence of Arabia, was, like Gertrude Bell, a solitary and enigmatic figure. As a student, he had cycled thousands of kilometres around France, documenting medieval fortress architecture, which gained him, like Gertrude, a first class honours degree. He also made the acquaintance of Dr. David Hogarth, who would likewise become his mentor, and offer him a scholarship working on his Hittite Carchemish project in Syria. Like Bell, Lawrence developed a deep and abiding love of Arabia and its people, becoming fluent in the language and developing a wide network of contacts and friendships that would become integral to the liberation of the region from Ottoman control. He was also deeply troubled by what he saw as British designs of their own, and his own complicit participation, despite his best efforts to secure independence for the Arabs. Gertrude and Lawrence collaborated in various capacities during the Arab Revolt but in different capacities. She became a political attaché and strategic advisor to British military commanders, while Lawrence worked directly with Arab forces, playing a key role in coordinating guerrilla warfare against the Turks. • #history #lawrenceofarabia #telawrence #ww1 #palestine #arab #ottoman • You can watch the full length video on Gertrude Bell here: • Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life ...
