The Rio Grande Southern was once a narrow gauge railroad that connected the towns of Durango with Telluride and Ridgway, Colorado. Like the much larger D RGW, the RGS gained its following for its scenery, its rustic charm, and the way it operated with its equipment, including the, Galloping Goose, railcars. The RGS would be wholly abandoned in the early 1950s, with few remnants of the line intact. • In August 2021, with help from Trains Magazine, some of the magic was rekindled. 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler No. 20, owned by the Colorado Railroad Museum, was brought down to the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad for a photo charter event out of Antonito, CO. Along with the string of vintage freight cars, K-27 2-8-2 463 was relettered and renumbered as RGS 455 for the doubleheader.
