Union Pacific's 4-8-8-4 Big Boy 4014 made its second ever trip across the United States during July and August 2019. The Great Race Across the Midwest brought the world's largest operable steam locomotive across Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin as it headed east to Chicago. • Freshly restored in May 2019, the Union Pacific 4014 has made a striking sight on the Union Pacific's mainline. The 4014 was one of 25 Big Boys built in the 1940s, a fleet of Super Power steam that could just as readily handle freight up the Wasatch grades out of Cheyenne as they could get long freights up to 55 mph. These 4-8-8-4s were Union Pacific's largest steam engines ever built, and among the largest in the world. The 4014 was built in November 1941, and it would be well used on freight and war efforts through 1959. One of eight preserved Big Boys, the 4014 was donated to the Southern California Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, California in 1962. It would remain displayed there until 2014, when it was reacquired by Union Pacific for full operational restoration. Nearly five years of rebuild later and six decades since it last ran, the Big Boy lives again, now with 40,000 miles of track to explore. • Follow along as the 4014 leads its second ever public excursion from Omaha to Boone, IA, and then continues on multiple days deadheading and displayed at Mason City, St. Paul, and the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, MN. The flatter tracks of the Midwest may not be what the engine was meant for, but the Big Boy still put on a good show. • 0:00 - Introducing the Big Boy • 1:23 - July 15: Omaha to Boone, IA • 6:52 - July 16: Boone to Mason City, IA • 12:41 - July 17: Mason City to St. Paul, MN • 17:52 - July 19: St. Paul to Lake Superior Railroad Museum • 22:04 - July 22: Superior, WI to St. Paul • 26:27 - July 23: St. Paul to Altoona, WI • 29:55 - The crews and the people who saw the 4014
