Pain becomes the instrument of external regulation, a self-sacrifice to appease and assuage the primitive deities of her devaluing, hateful introjects. External sadism is better tolerated and managed than the internal kind. • Self-punitive, self-trashing owing to bad externalized object. Sadistic man meets fully her masochistic needs. • Borderlines have a False Self but fulfills different roles to the narcissist and co-exists with the True Self. • While the narcissist’s false self is impregnable and defensive, intended to keep out a potentially hostile world - the borderline’s is wide open and beseeching, craves love, acceptance, and above all, a sense of safety. The False Self in both cases is imbued with aggression, but otherwise these childhood constructs could not be more different. • To sustain and buttress their sense of godlike superiority, narcissists surround themselves with manifestly inferior hangers-on: less endowed, less intelligent, less accomplished, or less handsome than they are. Narcissists idealize themselves and their role models du jour - and hold all others in profound and virulent contempt. • The Borderline surrounds herself with people she perceives as superior to her. Their friendship and allegiance undergird her sense of self-worth and self-esteem.
