Most of us have heard of the Winter Solstice and know it's the shortest day, but what exactly is the solstice and why does the amount of daylight vary through the year? This year, in 2016, the winter solstice took place at 10:44am GMT on 21st December, but the date can vary between the 20th and 23rd depending on leap years and time zones.
