A relatively new procedure, Kyphoplasty has proven successful in healing spinal fractures and reducing pain. Many surgeons recommend for young patients or patients with bone disease to heal naturally, but for eligible patients, Kyphoplasty could offer immediate pain relief. • The patient's medical provider will perform diagnostic tests such as x-rays and MRI scans to precisely locate the fracture. The anesthesiologist will then put the patient under general anesthesia. • Using an X-Ray guidance system called a Fluoroscope, the surgeon will insert a needle into the fractured vertebrae and inflate a small surgical balloon. This restores the vertebra’s shape and relieves the source of pain. The surgeon will then remove the balloon and inject a medical cement into the space, filling the cracked vertebrae and strengthening the area. As a minimally invasive outpatient procedure, Kyphoplasty usually does not require stitches, and patients may sometimes leave the hospital as little as one hour after surgery.
