Check out how easy it is to measure your deck and get the dimensions you need to get your project moving. • The best way to layout your measurements and keep everything clear is to sketch your deck area. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just an outline that’s easy to understand. On this drawing, you can label the sides or create a little key for your measurements. • Start by measuring each straight edge along the outside perimeter of your deck. Find the length of each section individually and note it on your draft. Unsure about the exact length? Round up to the closest foot. • Next, along the inner borders of your patio or deck where it meets the house, measure and label each straight segment. • Measuring for steps and staircases is a breeze. First, provide us with the width of your steps. Have a stair stringer in place? Lay your tape measure along the stringer and note the distance. • Working from a blueprint or floorplan? Provide us with the total height of your stairs and the total length out to the last step. We’ll do the rest. • Lastly, do you have any obstacles that could block the deck boards such as notches in the framing or existing posts and columns? Mark it down and we can work it out. • With these lengths in hand, estimating the number of deck boards you need is easy.
