If New Japan's most famous venue is the Tokyo Dome, AEW was All Egg Dome Wrestling. • It's no secret that New Japan Pro Wrestling is AEW's inspiration. This was AEW's biggest strength early on, until it wasn't. Without New Japan, there would be no AEW, but when Tony Khan formed AEW to fight a war in the states, he needed talent. And New Japan became a casualty. Everything from AEW's roster, to recreating Japanese-style tournaments to its obsession with retirements has taken AEW from a strong competitor to a weak impostor. And today, we're going to talk about how AEW became New Japan Plagiarism Wrestling, how it was once effective and why it's weakened both promotions long-term. • Subscribe in Swahili • IBOU STEPS DOWN • STFU Temu Idris. AEW launched in 2019 with its four founding fathers Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, Hangman Adam Page and the Young Bucks. Otherwise known as The Elite. The Elite rose to fame as a tight-knit group that chronicled its onscreen storylines and backstage shenanigans through the popular Being the Elite YouTube show. Being the Elite gained a cult following with The Elite mostly shooting angles for Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling as part of the Bullet Club. • This DIY style of wrestling was a breath of fresh air during a time where WWE was slumping hard. With an aging Vince McMahon at the helm, WWE's product was bad, and BTE was a satisfying, albeit non-threatening, alternative to the worldwide leader. That is, until BTE's Cult Following became a grassroots movement. At Wrestle Kingdom 12, Kenny Omega faced Chris Jericho in a match that would change wrestling forever. This was more than just an old WWE wrestler collecting a check in NJPW. This was Chris Jericho, the David Bowie of pro wrestling, once again reinventing himself, and at the same time rewriting the history of pro wrestling as we know it. • Jericho's match with Kenny Omega caught the attention of Tony Khan. A timid, Nice-Guy NepoBaby whose billion-dollar trust fund would create the most serious national competitor to WWE since WCW. But before that, The Elite-now piping hot due to the Jericho rub-had some history to make. • All In 2018, much like the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, was built on Dave Meltzer being wrong. In one of his rambiling Twitter Q A's that nobody asked for, Dopey Dave pontificated that he did not think ROH could sell out a 10,000-seat arena. • Cody Rhodes responded: • I'll take that bet Dave • I already gave them their biggest buyrate...put The Bucks I on the card 3-months to promote • CC • @ringofhonor • As usual, Cody was right.
