Kazusada Higuchi {C} • VS • Konosuke Takeshita • ~KO-D Openweight Title~ • 💣 • Dramatic Dream Team Pro Wrestling “Who’s Gonna Top?” (Korakuen Hall - Tokyo, Japan) • 💣 • when Kazusada Higuchi captured the KO-D Openweight title this summer, there was a small but vocal minority of fans casting doubt on his capability as a champiion. he’s not ready, they said. he’s just filling in for Endo, they said. they’re just gonna swap it to Takeshita so he can take it to America as a publicity stunt, they said. i hope those people feel extremely silly now that Higuchi has proven himself to not only be a worthy champion, but perhaps a top 3 ace in the world today. his first title defense against Tetsuya Endo at Wrestle Peter Pan was a pulse-pounding Match of the Year candidate, and this bout in Korakuen against DDT’s traveling emissary Konosuke Takeshita is in the very same rarified air. DDT takes pride in being the oddball promotion, yes, but there’s a misconception that they don’t take pride in their straight-laced wrestling as well. after wrestling in DDT for Jun Akiyama’s 30th Anniversary Match, Yuji Nagata remarked that he was blown away by the skill of DDT’s wrestlers. fans have always known this to be the case, but this year has driven it home even deeper as DDT’s top title scene has been almost completely absent of gimmicks. it is a strange time we live in where DDT scratches the itch for retro puro better than AJPW or NOAH (on most days), but god.
