The opening track of side two of Elton John's 1984 album Breaking Hearts. As a single it reached #5 in England. Along with Elton John, Bernie Taupin and Davey Johnstone, songwriting credit is given to South African Phineas MkHize, because Elton based the song on MkHize’s 1960s song “Isonto Lezayoni”. Taupin’s lyrics became a political statement calling for the desegregation of public transportation in South Africa. It also appeared on the 1986 Amnesty International album Rock for Amnesty. • You can hear MkHize’s original song here: • • Phineas Mkhize - Isonto Lezayoni • Elton John: Keyboards Vocals • Davey Johnstone: Guitars Backing Vocals • Dee Murray: Bass Backing Vocals • Nigel Olsson: Drums Backing Vocals • Produced by Chris Thomas at Air Studios, Montserrat • Passengers • Words Music by Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Davey Johnstone Phineas MkHize • ©1984 Big Pig Music Limited
