Kirbyville — The winter freeze that blanketed Southeast Texas with snow has long passed, but its impact on local agriculture lingers. Farmers in the region are still grappling with the aftermath of the storm, which left a trail of destruction in its wake. • Bill Taylor, owner of Taylor Farms, described the damage to his crops. It has burnt all my greens down, and of course at this time of year mustard greens are a primary source of income, he said. • Taylor, who built his farm off County Road 443 in Kirbyville after retiring, expressed his long-standing passion for agriculture. Always wanted to come back to farm. I bought this place, and it was nothing but stumps when I bought it, he said. • Taylor and his wife sell their produce at the Beaumont Farmers Market every week, but the storm has caused a drop in sales. I won't be able to sell in Beaumont for probably a couple more weeks. I'll lose four to five hundred dollars a week, Taylor said. • While some crops survived the harsh weather, Taylor noted that the damage makes them difficult to sell. It burnt the leaves off and they look rough, and people don't care to buy them because they're beat up so bad, he said. • For the Taylors, farming is not their sole source of income, but they are aware of the storm's impact on others who farm full-time. There's no need in me crying about how I was treated because I've got friends up in Colmesneil, it did the same thing to them. I've got friends up in Spurger, Hatton Farms, it did the same thing to him. It burned all his stuff down too, so all of us are in recovery mode right now, Taylor said. • Farmers across the region are now focused on recovery, regrowing their crops from the ground up. • _______________ • Follow KFDM on social media: • KFDM on Facebook: / kfdmnews • KFDM on Twitter: / kfdmnews • Subscribe to KFDM on YouTube: / @newsonkfdm • • For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit https://kfdm.com/ • Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://kfdm.com/watch • • Have a news tip?
