Many subway wall tiles will have automatic spacers built into the tile, for this reason it will not be necessary to use a separate spacer to install this type of tile, harder 3x6 porcelain tiles will generally not have these automatic spacers. Because the tile is to be installed in a shower stall, the tile will have to be installed using a thinset, mastic should not be used in a wet area. The backer board used should also be water safe, like Durock, Denshield or Hardi Board, or any Cement board, other options would include Schluter Kerdi and other waterproofing membranes, sheetrock, or green board should not be used. If a cement board is used a liquid applied waterproofing should be used in conjunction with the cement board.
