One is just part of the other. Words fascinate Emmanuel Ricketts aka Def Sound. He vibes off them and plays with them, and “ugly” is one word he’s been probing. He wants his music to be ugly, he says, and by that he means almost the opposite: something pure and unfiltered. • “When I make music it has to pass through so many filters before I left my friends hear it. So I’m trying to make uglier art. Everything has been about trying to prove I’m good at something, but maybe it should be about trying to prove that I’m bad — that I’m really bad. When I immerse myself in new music and attempt to make it myself, there is always something there — even if it’s a failure. I never leave the studio with nothing.” • Words flow out of him, and they’re connected in the moment to sound and even color. His Lightpad Block is handy, he says, “because it makes me feel more like a musician than just a songwriter. I’m able to get my ideas out so quickly.” • Hip hop is a collage that needs fresh ideas to stay alive, he says. So there’s no set style to his music. Style in that sense is decoration, he says, picking the thought up in verse: “I’m far from a decoration. I’m a vibration, a translation, a movement that expands to sacred but few get because it’s in a high cadence … I’m a Zoe Leonard poem from ’92 trapped inside of you. Get in touch with what’s guiding you, what’s driving you, what’s prodding you. Fear: get it out of you, prayers right before the interview. I just hope this inspires you.” • Learn more about Def Sound: • / def.sound • / defsound • http://cargocollective.com/defsound • / deffery • https://open.spotify.com/album/0Skhdz... • https://defsound.bandcamp.com/track/c... • / def.sound.music
