OPT is an employment benefit of your F-1 visa. It stands for Optional Practical Training. OPT is temporary employment authorization in your field of study. • Optional means that it’s not mandatory. • Practical means that it’s related to the degree you earned at the university. • Training means that it is helping you deepen and expand your knowledge in your field. • • Let’s see if you are eligible for OPT. OPT is available for: F-1 students who are in good academic standing and have been considered to be enrolled full-time for at least one academic year. • You can have up to 12 months of OPT per degree level. That means that, as long as you are going to a higher degree level, you can do OPT after your bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D.! • There are three types of OPT: • 1. Pre-completion - before you finish your degree • 2. Post-completion - after you finish your degree • 3. And an optional extension for eligible STEM majors • More on these in a later video. • OPT is a benefit that requires approval from the U.S. government agency called USCIS. So there’s an application process and an average wait of about 90 days from the date USCIS receives your application before approval. Don’t worry. We’ll help you along in the process and make sure your application is right. When it's approved, you will receive a work authorization card. • Up next: Learn how you can get OPT • Created using PowToon • Creative team: • Leah Collum: Voice • Indira Manandhar: Design Production • Trishala Khatri: Photography and Design Support • Priya Aphale: Channel Art • Sivaramakrishnan Sivasubramanian: Audio and Finishing • Melody Ricks: Creator and Project Manager • Short Guitar Clip by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) • Artist: http://audionautix.com/
