To write the structure for organic molecule 2,3-Dimethylpentane we’ll start by writing the longest Carbon chain (called the parent chain). Pentane is an alkane with six carbon atoms connected with single bonds. Next, we’ll number the Carbon atoms one through five. • Since it is 2,3-Dimethylpentane we’ll put one methyl group (-CH3) on Carbon atom number two and another methyl group on Carbon atom number three.. Each Carbon atom will have four single bonds so we'll add H atoms to each Carbon until there are four single bonds. This will give us the correct structure for 2,3-Dimethylpentane (we can consider this a Lewis Structure). • We can also write the structure using straight lines without the element symbols, which is a sort of molecular structure shorthand. Finally, we could represent the structure with molecular models to provide further information about the molecular geometry. • Note that each Carbon atom is sp3 hybridized in 2,3-Dimethylpentane and the molecular geometry with respect to each Carbon will be tetrahedral. The bond angles between atoms will be 109.5 degrees. This gives us the shape of the molecule. • Wikipedia Page for 2,3 -Dimethylpentane: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2,3-Dim...
