Our offering today is the lovely Christmas motet ‘O magnum mysterium’, set in four parts (SATB) by the great Spanish 16th century composer Victoria. • In the text, note the emphasis on the animals who sense the wonder of the baby in the manger. You may like to listen out for the beautifully simple chords at the words ‘Beata Virgo’ (Blessed Virgin) and, finally, the lively, dance-like ‘Alleluias’ which close the motet. • We have almost reached £500 in donations for which we are very grateful! If you haven’t yet donated but would like to help us towards our target of £1,000 towards the Cardiff branch of the Samaritans, here is the link: • https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Cari... • Thank you! • Here is the original Latin text of the motet followed by an English translation. We very much hope that you enjoy listening to this wonderful piece of music! • Latin text - • O magnum mysterium, • et admirabile sacramentum, • ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, • iacentem in praesepio! • Beata Virgo, cujus viscera • meruerunt portare • Dominum Iesum Christum. • Alleluia! • English translation - • O great mystery, • and wonderful sacrament, • that animals should see the newborn Lord, • lying in a manger! • Blessed is the virgin whose womb • was worthy to bear • the Lord, Jesus Christ. • Alleluia!
