A nitty-gritty video on how to get started tanning critters. • Don’t Forget To Subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/c/MainelyAcre... • Here are a couple tips on getting started tanning your own hides: • Remove the hide from the animal as soon as possible. • Salt or freeze the hide right away (If you freeze the hide you will have to salt if after removing it from the freezer). • Allow your hide to fully dry out when salting, this may require more amounts of salt to complete. • After your hide is completely dried out it’s time to rehydrate and flesh it. • There are a couple methods I use in fleshing hides: One is using a power washer with a turbo tip (I only use this method on large game, do not try this on small hides!!) the second method is on a fleshing beam with a fleshing knife. • Now that your hide is all clean you can either tan it right away using the brain tan method or you can throw it into a pickle to use a chemical tan. • If brains are not your thing have no worries.
