The Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built 2300 years ago by order of the provincial governor Li Bing. It is located about 60 km northwest of Chengdu. Here, the Minjiang, an important tributary of the Jangtse was divided in the middle by a dam and a flat dyke, the so-called fish mouth. The water of the inner Minjiang flows on the level of Chengdu and irrigates today 600.000 hectare of land in the complete Sichuan basin. At inundation the water is conducted over a spillway into the outer Minjiang. A 261 m long suspension bridge allow people to cross the raging flood of the Minjiang River safely at high water. Today's Anlan Bridge, also known as Couple Bridge, was originally built from wood and rattan. Later, steel cables were used since the bridge swayed too much. • Today, the original Dujiangyan dam system can only be only seen as a replica; it was replaced by a concrete dam. The complex includes the beautiful Erwang Temple, dedicated to the builder and his son. Es liegt ca 60 km nordwestlich von Chengdu. • Hier wurde der Minjiang, ein bedeutender Nebenfluss des Jangtse durch einen aufgeschütteten Damm und einen flachen Deich, das sogenannte Fischmaul in der Mitte geteilt. Das Wasser des inneren Minjiang fließt auf die Ebene von Chengdu und bewässert heute 600.000 Hektar Land im gesamten Sichuan-Becken. Bei Überschwemmung wird das Wasser über eine Überlaufrinne in den äußeren Minjiang geleitet. Eine 261 m lange Hängebrücke ermöglichte den Menschen den bei Hochwasser tobenden Minjiang sicher zu überqueren. Die heutige Anlan Brücke,auch Ehepaarbrücke genannt, war ursprünglich aus Holz und Rattan gebaut. Da sie zu sehr schwankte wurden später Stahlseile verwendet. • Die ursprüngliche Dammanlage ist nur noch als Nachbildung zu sehen und wurde durch ein Betonwerk ersetzt. Zur Anlage gehört auch der Erwang Tempel, sein sehr schöner Tempel, der dem Erbauer und seinem Sohn geweiht ist. Die gesamte Anlage ist seit 2000 als Weltkulturerbe von der UNESCO geschützt. • 2006 wurde die Anlage durch die Zipingpu Talsperre ergänzt. 2008 ereignete sich hier ein schweres Erdbeben.
