The Epic of Gilgamesh concerns the mythological adventures of the titular Sumerian king. • • Initially a tyrannical ruler, his cruelty is later tempered by his introduction to Enkidu, a companion created by the goddess Aruru. • • The two embark upon a quest to kill Humbaba, a monster guarding the Cedar Forest. They hope, with this effort, to purge evil from the world and solidify Gilgamesh's status as a hero. • • They complete the task and also kill the Bull of Heaven: a beast called to Earth by the goddess Ishtar after Gilgamesh spurns her romantic overtures. Enkidu, however, is later punished by the gods for his part in these feats and ultimately dies. • • Gilgamesh’s quest to bring Enkidu back to life—or to avoid death himself—becomes his obsession. Devastated, Gilgamesh completes his journey alone and returns to Uruk a fairer and more worldly ruler. • • Evident in this earliest of tales are the classic dramatic conceits of the hero's journey that drive popular stories even today. • • The Epic of Gilgamesh was written c. 2100-1200 BCE. While the author is unknown, Sîn-lēqi-unninni edited the epic novel in c. 1200 BCE. He lived in Babylon and was a scholar, priest, and poet. He revised the more ancient stories of Gilgamesh to create the version on which modern translations are based. Sîn-lēqi-unninni deals with Gilgamesh’s triumphs and ultimate failure sympathetically and, occasionally, with wry humor. • • The Epic of Gilgamesh contains many important symbols, including Uruk, as it embodies Gilgamesh’s transformation from cruel to wise king. It also symbolizes the classic hero’s journey, symbolizing Gilgamesh’s misguided search for immortality, and monsters, which represent Gilgamesh’s and Enkidu’s desire for fame and power. • • Explore Course Hero’s collection of free literature study guides, Q A pairs, and infographics here: https://www.coursehero.com/lit/ • • About Course Hero: • Course Hero helps empower students and educators to succeed!
