India After Independence [Lec 01], Lecture of 2 October 2014, Fall 2014 course at UCLA. Brief introduction to the course; discussion of the syllabus; requirements for students; and an overview, continuing into the next two lectures, of the events leading up to the independence and partition of India in 1947. What is the difference between a nation, nation-state, and civilization? The lecture suggests how we may start thinking about the tension between India as nation-state and India as a civilization: the Palestinians as an illustration of a nation without a nation-state. Some rudimentary remarks on economic development in India. • See the full playlist for “India after Independence (1947-present): Politics, History, Society (2014)”:    • India after Independence (1947-presen...   • Subscribe for more lectures on Indian Civilization, World History, Bollywood, Gandhi, and much else... • Blog: https://vinaylal.wordpress.com/ • MANAS (a pedagogical website on Indian history, culture, religions, politics, and so on): http://southasia.ucla.edu/ • UCLA Faculty Page: https://history.ucla.edu/faculty/vina... • Books: https://vinaylal.wordpress.com/books-...
