(6 Aug 2007) HEADLINE: 21 years after Challenger, teacher set to fly • CAPTION: A former Idaho teacher who trained with Christa McAuliffe, is set to fly Wednesday on the space shuttle Endeavour to the International Space Station. (Aug. 6) • • • [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] • • [Notes:shots of Endeavor] • The countdown has begun for NASA's launch of the space shuttle Endeavour -- and among the astronauts waiting for liftoff is a former schoolteacher who's waited 22-years for her ride into space. • • [Notes:file] • In 1985 -- Barbara Morgan was chosen from thousands of applicants to be the back-up to teacher-in-space Christa McAuliffe. • • The two trained together for six months ... Seen here in October of that year. • • SOT: nats • • [Notes:file of challenger explosion] • McAuliffe was on board the Challenger when it exploded in January 1986. • • Morgan remembers her vividly. • • SOT: Barbara Morgan, Mission Specialist/Teacher-in-Space: • I learned so much from Christa.to pay attention to what's important and let the other things go, not worry so much about things. And, to Christa, what was most important to her were people and their dignity and her students. • • [Notes:nasa video] • • After the accident, Morgan returned to teaching in Idaho .. But NASA asked her to stay on as the teacher-in-space designee. • • She later became a full astronaut. • • SOT: These are all great guesses. First of all, for Earth, what's this over here on that side? • • During the 22-year wait for launch, Morgan has often given speeches, and taught space exploration to students. • • SOT: Barbara Morgan, Mission Specialist/Teacher-in-Space: • Some of the things we'll be doing on orbit, we want our young people to be thinking about, look deep inside, not look at us, but look deep inside and what is it that they're curious about. • • [Notes:picture of crews] • Morgan is set to launch with six other astronauts on Wednesday. • • On this mission, the 55-year-old hopes to play an integral role. • • SOT: Barbara Morgan, Mission Specialist/Teacher-in-Space: • Some of my responsibilities are the shuttle arm and the station robotic arm and load master for all the transfer and on entry, I'll be sitting on the flight deck helping with our entry duties. • • Endeavor's mission to the international space station is scheduled to last 11-days. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter: / ap_archive • Facebook: / aparchives • Instagram: / apnews • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
