In the fourth corner - north-east - a high bergfried was located. Two residential wings were erected: north and south. In the first half of the fourteenth century, the walls and corner towers were raised, and the eastern and western wings were erected, closing the courtyard. At a later stage, the buildings were raised, and an outer bailey was established on the south side, protected by fortifications with towers and two gate towers. The castle in Gniew was the most powerful Teutonic fortress on the left bank of the Vistula, but despite this, it was occupied (without a fight) by the Polish army in 1410. Under the peace treaty of Toruń (1411), it returned to the Teutonic hands the following year. During the so-called During the Thirteen Years' War, the stronghold was besieged several times by Prussian insurgents and the army of Casimir IV Jagiellon. However, only the siege led by Piotr Dunin from July 27, 1463 to January 1, 1464 was successful - the castle was captured and never returned to the Teutonic Order, becoming the seat of the starosts. In 1626, the fortress of Gniew was captured by the Swedish army, and the attempt to retake it on October 1 of that year ended in defeat for the army of Sigismund III Vasa. Only the offensive of hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski in July 1627 restored the Gniew castle in Polish hands. During the Swedish Deluge, the fortress suffered greatly. After the occupation of Gniew by Prussia in 1772, the castle played many roles: it was a military warehouse, a granary, and finally a prison. At the same time, the main tower was demolished, replacing it with a tower similar to other corner towers, the vaults and plasters were removed - the interior of the castle lost its Gothic character. The castle in Gniew owes its present appearance to the reconstruction carried out in several stages from 1968 to the present day. • 🎵 Laserdisc by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... • Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/honor/ • Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/
