That was Suzannah Lightfoots unenviable position when Guy Bowers-Bentinck rescued her. • She had to accept his help though she didnt want to be beholden to such an infuriatingly arrogant man. Hes so tiresome and ill-tempered and impatient and he must hate the sight of me, Suzannah reflected as fate kept throwing them together. So it was just as well, she told herself, that she wasnt prepared to join the queue of females wanting to marry him • Members Reviews: • Would you lend me a pound? • The Chain of Destiny reminds of An Independent Woman, which is one of my favorite Neels' books in that the hero helps the heroine find work and is there when the heroine gets into a tight jam. In The Chain of Destiny, however, the heroine is more aware of the hero's assistance, and while she is not pleased to have to accept help, she does. Also, the hero in this one is not motivated for much of the book by his love for the heroine. Still, it is a good read and one of Neels' better books. • The heroine, Suzannah Lightfoot, first encounters the hero, Guy Bowers-Bentnick, when she is conducting a tour of the local manor house, which is owned by friends of his, including Phoebe, the young woman who has her eye on him and serves as the story's Mean Woman. Shortly thereafter, her terminally-ill aunt takes a turn for the worse and, at the request of the local doctor, brain-surgeon Guy examines Suzannah's aunt and is the one to tell her that the elderly woman would not awaken from her coma or last the day. Pheobe, having plans for the small cottage, waits a week after the funeral, and then gives Suzannah two-week's notice and tells her to vacate the cottage. • So, Suzannah is alone with little money, no training, and no prospects. She is determined, however, to take care of herself and to find a position that will accept her cat, the only thing left that she loves and that loves her in return. Guy Bowers-Bentnick is a cold man and is, in the words of Suzannah, tiresome, ill-tempered, and impatient. You just know this is not going to be an easy romance. • Guy and Suzannah get off to a bad start, but she is as much to blame as he is. For no reason I could see, she is rude to him and counters his attempts to help her by telling him to go away. He does, but not before telling her he thought he might help her, but he was wrong. This certainly sets up friction between the two! Unfortunately, it also made it harder for me to like either of them. • As I said, Guy is not motivated by love, but he feels bad for her. Despite her throwing his attempts to help her back in his face, Guy comes up with a plan, and convinces his own elderly aunts to advertise in the local paper for someone to catalog their mess of family papers and to hire Suzannah for the job when she applies. From there, he openly finds and offers her another position, although their relationship remains a chilly one. • Of course, Suzannah does not want to be beholden to him, and, seeing as how she has fallen in love with him and he cannot possibly love her, she decides to move far away and without Guy knowing where she has gone. She tries to do this twice. Ah, but Guy cannot help but think about her...and he must find the plain Suzannah with beautiful eyes and copper-red hair. And so, from the luxury of his Bentley, Guy's search is on...and the story gets better. • In all honesty, I warmed up to Guy more than I did Suzannah.
