In a Socratic seminar, the closing question makes ideas personal. Throughout the seminar, questions become progressively more analytical, requiring evaluation and logic. Then to close, the teacher asks a more personal question, challenging students to find what the seminar topic means to them. • Learn how to teach a Socratic seminar and get free lesson plans at www.paideia.org. • All good Socratic questions are open-ended, thought-provoking and clear. In this video of a Socratic seminar discussing a dollar bill, the leader asks as her closing question, What does money mean to you? • This is a good example of a closing question, which is designed to get the students to think about what the themes from the seminar mean in their own lives. • Students have a wide range of answers to the question. To one, money means being rich. To another, money means happiness. To a third, money means investment. • Personal questions like these are known as maieutic questions, from the Greek word for midwife, because they help students to give birth to their own ideas. • Using the Paideia method, students will develop the ideas that they expressed in the seminar through writing or other assignments. Integrating writing assignments into Socratic seminars leads to far more sophisticated and complex student writing. • In Paideia schools, Socratic seminars are the heart of the educational experience. Through Socratic seminars students learn to think, not just memorize information. Seminars allow students to experience the excitement of generating their own ideas, which leads to higher student motivation and improved text scores. • The Paideia method for teaching seminars is aligned with the Common Core language arts curriculum, teaching students essential 21st century skills, including reading, speaking and listening and writing. • Learn more about how to ask Socratic questions here: http://www.paideia.org/socratic-quest...
