She is the only known individual to have survived with complete facial duplication. You want to know her story and what happened to her? Watch until the end! • It is hard not to stare again and again when you see Lali for the first time with her perfectly symmetric faces: four eyes, two noses, two mouths but only one pair of ears and one head. Not difficult to understand why she was immediately considered as a reincarnation of a Hindu goddess in Northern India where she was born in March 2008. • But first, let's understand her condition. Lali is not a case of conjoined twins. She was born with Diprosopus which is an extremely rare congenital disorder where parts or all of the face are duplicated on the head. This is caused by the protein SHH whose excess leads to the duplication of facial structures and whose lack leads to their underdevelopment such in Cyclopia. • All her family insisted that Lali had a goddess status encouraged by the hundreds of people flocking to the family’s house to worship her and seek blessings and so refused that specialized doctors evaluate their daughter's condition. • Although her family reported that she was functioning normally, Lali developed corneal opacity because she couldn't properly close those eyes which at first was wrongly blamed on camera flashes. Also she was unable to suck properly due to her cleft palate and was fed a poor diet of sugar solution and diluted milk. This led to her dehydration and the spread of infection. And yet, the extended family and her village's chief kept refusing her hospital admission but her parents defied them and took her to the hospital. Sadly, it was too late and she died of a heart attack at just two months old. • For the curious minds, many questions will remain forever unanswered: Could she see in two different directions?
