So, I'd been seeing those super-cheap Venus instruments on eBay FOREVER, and people kept asking about them on various bulletin boards, so I finally thought Well, it's ONLY $200, and someone should buy one and test it out and tell everyone what they're like , so I went for it. It has an ebonite body, gold plated keys, and came with 2 headjoints, an ebonite one and a gold-plated one. • • Well...3 months later, I'm still using it in the pit of my Broadway tour and it hasn't let me down yet! I was BEYOND suprised at how well it played, and the intonation is fantastic (any intonation problems you hear are purely my fault, like that grossly flat high E at 0:57...sorry about that!). The keywork could be sturdier, obviously (IT WAS TWO HUNDRED BUCKS!), but it is still quite serviceable and I have no complaints thus far. • • Is it a Powell or a Burkart or a Keefe? No, but unless you've got an audition for the Met Opera or Philharmonic coming up, it's certainly adequate for playing occasionally in a cold pit! • • (I also quite prefer the metal headjoint....if nothing else, this experiment has made me crave a Burkart with gold keys and a 14K gold Clarion headjoint :-P) • • Happy piccoloing!
