He lives peacefully with his wife Shakuntala and his widow mother. The only thing missing in their life is the absence of a child. Shakuntala wakes up in the middle of the night to pray to God and weeps when alone as she wants to become a mother. Shashikanta's mother despises her daughter--in-law for not being able to present her with a grandchild. The depression becomes killing and Shakuntala falls extremely ill. Her body temperature does not seem to subside. By the time a doctor is brought from the town to treat her, she loses her eyesight. Shashikanta's mother is more annoyed and in sheer craftiness sends her back to her own house, secretly planning to make Shashikanta remarry. Shakuntala's brother is annoyed at this behaviour and when Shashikanta comes to take his wife home, refuses to send her stating he will only do so once his sister gets her due respect. Shashikanta leaves alone. His mother in the meantime fixes his marriage to Sandhya, a pretty young lady known for her singing. Back at home, Shakuntala realizes that she has conceived. The baby is born and Shakuntala continues to look after the kid at her home. Both the Sandhya and Shashikanta are against their marriage with each other and the negotiations break. Sandhya is united with her ex lover. Shashikanta comes to know that he was now a prod father. He rushes back to bring Shakumtala and his kid.
