The Heck (Mizoroki-Heck) reaction is one of the first examples of palladium-catalyzed cross coupling reactions that were the topic of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This reaction couples an aryl or vinyl halide to a substituted alkene, allowing for the creation of complex (and often polycyclic) molecules and natural products. In this video, we discuss the scope, mechanism, and limitations of the Heck reaction, as well as an example of its use in the total synthesis of morphine in the literature. • Alkenes Review: • Properties and Synthesis of Alkenes |... • Support Total Organic Chemistry on Patreon!: patreon.com/totalorganicchemistry • Website: totalorganicchemistry.com • Facebook: facebook.com/totalorganicchemistry
