(15 Aug 1996) English/Nat • • Presidential hopeful Bob Dole and his running mate, Jack Kemp, are rehearsing their lines ahead of making their acceptance speeches at Thursday night's glittering finale of the Republican Convention in San Diego. • • For Dole, lagging in the opinion polls, it is the most important speech of his political career. • • The band played Thriller by Michael Jackson, the crowd got in the groove and the nation asked if Bob Dole - not known for his speeches- could indeed enthrall the nation tonight. • • Everyone who's top of the bill needs a warm up man or in Bob Dole's case - a warm up woman. • • Wife Elizabeth Dole was strutting her stuff among Young Republicans hours before her husband gave his acceptance speech to thousands of delegates and a coast-to-coast television audience. • • Mrs Dole is literally taking the message to voters - opting again for an Oprah Winfrey talk show host presentation as she urged her audience to tune in tonight for a speech, she says, they'll never forget • • SOUNDBITE: (English) • Be sure to watch television tonight, or be right there on the floor, because you are going to hear a speech that you will always remember. • SUPER CAPTION: Elizabeth Dole • • Dole's number two Jack Kemp is no stranger to the big occasion - he raised his game to win medals as a pro footballer and as a politician he's a comfortable orator. • • Thursday morning ,leaving for a breakfast reception, he said he wasn't nervous - - quarterbacks,he said, don't get butterflies. • • SOUNDBITE: • Butterflys, Quaterbacks don't get Butterflys. • SUPER CAPTION: Jack Kemp • • If he did need some advice one man who's done it all before was there to give a helping hand. • • Four years ago Quayle was George Bush's number two. • • SOUNDBITE: (English) • Jack Kemp is going to love being number two. I've been there, you have moments of frustration - I had it, George Bush had it when he was vice-president, Al Gore I'm sure had it, Walter Mondale - we've all had it. But Jack Kemp is going to learn to love being number two. • SUPER CAPTION: Dan Quayle, former vice-president • • Kemp is notorious for making long speeches - tonight's programme restricts him to 15 minutes though he joked with reporters that it would be 90 minutes. • • SOUNDBITE: (English) • Got to go and work on hour and half long.... • SUPER CAPTION: Jack Kemp • • The man who speaks off the cuff with ease is however rehearsing every word of tonight's address - he plans a four hour session with aides this afternoon. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter: / ap_archive • Facebook: / aparchives • Instagram: / apnews • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
