Voters have created America's first ultra-orthodox town. • 23,000 Haredi Jews live in the village of Kiryas Joel, about an hour north of New York City. Tensions had been rising between the Haredi and the mostly Christian residents of Monroe. Now, a referendum has officially split Kiryas Joel from Monroe to form the town of Palm Tree. • There are more than 300,000 Haredi in the U.S., and the population is doubling every 20 years. They've traditionally lived in cities like New York, segregated from their secular neighbors. But they've also been expanding to smaller towns, creating communities like Palm Tree. • Subscribe to Vocativ: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... • Find us everywhere else: • Facebook: / vocativ • Twitter: / vocativ • Instagram: / vocativ • Snapchat: / vocativ • Website: http://www.vocativ.com • Vocativ explores the nexus of media and technology, where science meets storytelling.
