Magawa, a rat that became a local hero in Cambodia for his ability to sniff out landmines, died on January 11 at the age of 8. Magawa’s death was confirmed by APOPO, an NGO that trains animals to detect landmines and tuberculosis. • ‘All of us at APOPO are feeling the loss of Magawa, and we are grateful for the incredible work he’s done,' the NGO said in a statement. ‘Magawa was in good health and spent most of last week playing with his usual enthusiasm, but towards the weekend he started to slow down, napping more and showing less interest in food in his last days.' • Cambodia experienced three decades of unrest and civil war between the 1960s and 1990s, and many undetected landmines and UXOs (unexploded ordinances) remain buried in its countryside, posing an ongoing threat to present-day residents. • Magawa was an African Giant Pouched rat who was originally born and trained in Tanzania. He had identified 71 landmines and 38 UXOs during his life. He was awarded a gold medal by UK veterinary organization PDSA in 2020, and retired in 2021. • » Sign up for our newsletter KnowThis to get the biggest stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox: https://go.nowth.is/knowthis_youtube • » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe • For more animal news, subscribe to NowThis News. • #Magawa #RIP #Cambodia #Politics #News #NowThis • Connect with NowThis • » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook • » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter • » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram • » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat • NowThis is your premier news outlet providing you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on all the latest in trending news.
