MARTIAL LAW IN EASTERN UKRAINE TO LEAD TO INCREASED LEVELS OF VIOLENCE - 18 June - Imposition of martial law in eastern Ukraine is a wrong step and will lead to increased levels of violence, warned Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin. If the current violence is not enough, the military situation seems to lead to its growth. Churkin mentioned reports coming in about English-speaking foreign mercenaries fighting in Eastern Ukraine. He characterised the situation as very difficult. • On 17 June, the Ukrainian parliament postponed for two days a debate on an appeal to President Petr Poroshenko to impose martial law in the Donetsk and Lugansk Regions.
