MARTIAL LAW IN EASTERN UKRAINE TO LEAD TO INCREASED LEVELS OF VIOLENCE - 18 June - Imposition of martial law in eastern Ukraine is a wrong step and will lead to increased levels of violence, warned Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin. If the current violence is not enough, the military situation seems to lead to its growth. This is the wrong thing to do the diplomat said, commenting on the forthcoming Verkhovna Rada's appeal to President Petr Poroshenko. • Vitaly Churkin expressed regret about Ukrainian President Petr Poroshenko having chosen a military operation rather than talks with Donetsk and Lugansk. • According to Churkin, this is a very unfortunate start for Poroshenko's presidency. This is not what was expected from him. He had a wonderful opportunity to make a fresh start and agree to talks with Eastern Ukraine as a goodwill gesture. He decided on a military operation instead, the Russian diplomat said. He believes that the plan to use force against any attempts to secede from Ukraine is the worst scenario. • Vitaly Churkin said that it is doubtful that Petr Poroshenko keeps the Ukrainian armed forces under control. Churkin mentioned reports coming in about English-speaking foreign mercenaries fighting in Eastern Ukraine. He characterised the situation as very difficult. • On 17 June, the Ukrainian parliament postponed for two days a debate on an appeal to President Petr Poroshenko to impose martial law in the Donetsk and Lugansk Regions. Speaker of Verkhovna Rada Alexander Turchinov urged the MPs to take an active part in contributing suggestions for the wording of the appeal. • http://voiceofrussia.com/news/2014_06...
