Hiking The Prairie Hiking the Joseph H Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Pawhuska Oklahoma

For something completely different then our hikes in the northeast (or even in the mountains of OK and AR), Paul, the @OklahomoHiker took us on a hike in the Joseph Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve just outside of Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The original plan had also been to visit the Pioneer Woman's restaurant and shop (The Mercantile) in Pawhuska, but we hadn't realized it was all closed on a Sunday. That just gave us more time to check out the Preserve, which included a hike on the just over 3 miles long Nature Trail near the visitor center. • The Nature Trail has three interconnected trail loops which pass through the major habitat types found in the preserve and on the prairie. The trail is well maintained and easy to walk. If you pick up a trail brochure, there are numbered markers that coincide with information in the brochure. • For the two of us, who haven't ever really spent time on foot in the prairie, especially in remnants of the original prairie, it was an incredible experience. The openness is just something you don't see at all in the northeast, and it was also very cool to see the different plants and animals (though we never did see a real bison) along the way. Combined with checking out the rest of the Preserve, this was definitely worth the time and travel to check out. • Find additional information about the Joseph H.
