Norman J. Warren directed exploitation films from 1967 to 1987 and then began a new career meeting fans at conventions and festivals and becoming widely known as one of the nicest men in the film business. McG worked with him on several projects down the years. This week’s episode of LDYK is the first of McG's two-part tribute to his longest-standing movie friendship: 54 years. • McG’s first Warren witness is Dr Adrian Smith, lecturer in film studies at Sussex University, whose book about Norman, Gentleman of Terror, will be published later this year. Adrian grew up watching Hammer horrors on late night TV and later attended conventions to have his photo taken with Hammer stars like Martine Beswick and Valerie Leon. • At one of these events Adrian met Norman and decided to write a book about him. Alan Jones of FrightFest fame has written the foreword. • Adrian discusses Norman’s films, which began in 1959 with an amateur short called “Incident.” From sex films he moved to horror and titles like “Satan’s Slave” and “Terror”, both written by McG. His biggest hit was the sci-fi bloodbath “Inseminoid.” • Norman’s fans who are also Patreon subscribers are particularly well catered for! They can see the first film he directed, “Incident”, and his last film, “Turn Your Bloody Phone Off”, made for FrightFest in 2013. Adrian also discusses a film he produced in 2018, “SuSu”, still unreleased in the West. It was made while Norman was enjoying his late fascination with everything Chinese. • Are you a Patreon member yet?
