Basic backstroke technique requires a flat and streamlined body position. http://www.swim-teach.com/backstroke.... • The arm and leg action are alternating and continuous giving the stroke a balanced and rhythmical movement. • Video Transcript: • The body must be as horizontal and streamlined as possible, with the head inline and eyes looking upwards and slightly towards the feet remaining steady throughout. The shoulders roll slightly in time with the arm action and the hips roll to help give an efficient kick. • The alternating kick balances the upper body roll to help maintain a streamlined movement. The continuous kick remains within the body width and originates from the hip. The toes are pointed with the ankles relaxed and the knee bends slightly to provide power on the upbeat phase of the kick, finishing as the toes break the water surface to provide a small splash. The depth, power and frequency of the kick will depend on the distance and pace of the swim. • The arm action must be controlled and rhythmical. The hand enters the water little finger first , palm outwards at a point above the head, in-between the center line and the shoulder. The arm pulls through an S shape pathway finishing at the hip, palm facing downward. One arm begins to pull as the other recovers over the water surface. • The breathing pattern should be regular and in time with the effort phases of the stroke. The swimmer should be able to maintain a rhythmical breathing pattern regardless of the distance and pace of the swim. • The kicking and arm action should be controlled and steady whilst maintaining a fixed head position. All actions should smooth and continuous in respect of the distance and pace of the swim. • Download How To Swim Backstroke where the swimming stroke is broken down into easy to follow exercises that clearly explain what each part of your body should be doing.
