He is best known as detective in the crime drama television series Bergerac (as Jim Bergerac 1981–1991) and Midsomer Murders (as Chief Inspector #Tom_Barnaby 1997–2011). • Bergerac , set in the island of Jersey, ran from 1981 to Christmas 1991. It stars John Nettles as #Jim_Bergerac, who was initially a detective sergeant in The Foreigners' Office , a fictional department within the Jersey Police, but later becomes a private investigator. The long-running television series Midsomer Murders , a British television detective drama that has aired on ITV since 1997, is based on Caroline Graham's Chief Inspector Barnaby book series. The series has been marketed worldwide in numerous countries.
