When carrying out laboratory experiments, sometimes there is a need to compare slopes or gradients that you obtained. There is a simple way to do this in PAST. For this example, we are measuring the grazing rate on Escherichia coli (as prey). The difference in the rate of decrease in E. coli between total seawater (with predator) and size-fractionated seawater (without predator) suggests the grazing rate on E. coli. Due to the decreasing E. coli counts, the gradient or slope is negative. As we only wished to determine the difference in the slopes (for grazing rate calculation), we used the absolute values or ABS in Excel.
