An interview with Architect Dr. Varinlioglu, Fulbright Chevening Alumni, Visiting Scholar Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Assoc Prof. Department of Architecture, Izmir University of Economics, Principal investigator and the director of SILK. • Together with her U.S. Partner Nagakura (MIT Design Heritage Lab) and his team, they are traveling the width and breadth of Turkey, raising public awareness and profile of many of the beautiful cultural heritage sites along the ancient SILK roads. • Their goal - to release countless artifacts, from GIS, Digital reconstructions, 360 virtual tours and online Virtual Reality experiences of today’s caravanserais, for all to enjoy! • The Turkish team is responsible for managing the project, organizing the online and in-person sessions for locals, as well as processing the digital data, and overseeing the social media campaigns. • The U.S is responsible for developing and maintaining the web service of the group’s online platform for digital heritage datasets. This is an ideal collaboration between technical experts and owners of cultural heritage. • Their mutual interest in the preservation and presentation of architectural heritage led to the creation of a collaborative platform for Turkey, aiming to democratize architectural heritage through crowdsourcing. They use photogrammetry and panoramic videos to capture and preserve historic buildings.
