Hello everyone! Hope you all had a safe Memorial Day weekend. Let's continue celebrating Fantasia's 80th anniversary by exploring the second chapter of Walt Disney's Fantasia, by John Culhane. • We will explore the first classical selection of Fantasia, Johann Sebastian Bach's legendary masterpiece: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. Usually played on a keyboarded instrument (i.e. the organ), Leopold Stokowski famously rearranged it for the orchestra. Since performing this version of the Toccata and Fugue on film for the first time in 100 Men and a Girl , it became Stokowski's signature piece. He continued to perform it until his final performance at 90 years old. • Anyway, since this piece is an example of what Deems Taylor called absolute music , one that doesn't paint a picture or tell a story, Walt Disney wanted this selection to be brought to life via abstraction animation. With the help of contributions from several artists, including Disney animator Cy Young and abstract purist Oskar Fischinger, the Toccata and Fugue became the film's visual overture that it is today. Furthermore, it would be the inspiration for a few memorable scenes from future movies in and outside of Disney. • Hope you all enjoy this video.
