Poonthottam (English: Garden of flowers) is a 1998 Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by Kalanjiyam. The film features Murali and Devayani in the lead roles, while Raghuvaran, Manivannan and Vijayalakshmi play other supporting roles. Kalanjiyam. Produced by Kaja Moideen, Gananavel, and Jayaprakash it has Murali in the main role teamed with FDevayani for the first time. Others in the cast are Manivannan, M.N.Nambiar, Raghuvaran, V.A.Moorthy, Vadivelu, Vijay Adiray, Nazer, Sunder, Ambika, Sathyan, Thalaivasal Vijay, Vadivukarasi, Manaroma and Vijayalakshmi. Songs by Vasan, Arivumathi and Mu. Metha get tuned by llayaraja. Ramnath Shetty is the cinematographer. • I always believe in giving different subject in each of my pictures. There is no point in giving the same wine in new bottles and audience are also not fools to think that we are giving new only. In my first film Poomani I dealt with educated and uneducated brothers and their relationship. In Kizhakum Merkum it was about conflict among the relations and affection between brother and sister. In my third film Poonthottam I am dealing with an orphan’s longing for love and affection. Another plus factor in this movie is the musical score of llayaraja. Director briefed about the way he deals his latest film. When asked about the story he continued: • Murali lives as a tenant in Devayani’s house who does not have regular income. One day he come late fully drunk as he spent the evening with his friends in a bar. In the mele he opened the main door and took the heavy lock inside instead of taking the keys. After reaching upstairs only he understands that he had taken the lock in his hand instead of the keys. He threw the lock through the window, which hits Devayani on her head who was downstairs. Murali does not know that happened thereafter but Devayani is taken to the hospital by others. Only the next day Murali learns what happened in the previous night and get ashamed of his behavior. He apologies to her and vows that he will not consume liquor here after. The relationship turns to be tender love and what happens afterwards forms rest of the story. • Through his earlier pictures Mu. Kallanjiyam has proved to be a good technician. He knows how to attract the audience and in his experience he has correctly understood the taste of tamil viewers too. Like his other two movies Poonthottam will also be a family drama to be welcomed by one and all.
