This animation illustrates the plate tectonic and paleogeographic development of the Earth during the last 540 million years. Dark blue areas are deep ocean. Light blue areas are shallow seas covering the continents. Green areas are land. Mountains are colored tan and brown. The dashed, white line is the Equator. A clock in the upper right-hand part of the screen marks time in millions of years. • The plate tectonic model was developed by the PALEOMAP Project. The changing topography and bathymetry is based on an evolving digital elevation model for the oceans and continents. Notice how the seas flood onto the continents and the mountains grow and erode through time. • Hold on to your hat!
