A tragic boat accident near the Gateway of India in Mumbai on Wednesday has claimed the lives of 13 people. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. when a ferry named Neelkamal, carrying 110 passengers, collided with a speedboat while on its way to the famous Elephanta Caves. The impact caused the ferry to capsize, sending people into the water. • The Neelkamal ferry was heading to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination known for its ancient rock-cut caves. The collision happened when a speedboat, which was undergoing engine trials, lost control due to a malfunction and hit the ferry. As a result, water began flooding the ferry, and it overturned. • One of the passengers on the ferry shared their experience, saying, “The speedboat crashed into our boat, and water started flooding in. The driver told us to wear life jackets. I swam for 15 minutes before another boat rescued me.” Passengers rushed to nearby boats for safety as the ferry sank. • Rescue Operations and Casualties • Out of the 110 people on the Neelkamal ferry, 13 people have been confirmed dead. The victims include ten civilians and three Navy personnel who were on the speedboat. However, 99 people were rescued, and the ferry’s crew members were all reported safe. • The Navy and Coast Guard quickly responded to the accident, launching an extensive rescue operation. Eleven Navy boats, three Marine Police boats, one Coast Guard ship, and four helicopters were sent to help. Local police, port authorities, and fishermen also joined in the rescue efforts. Those rescued were immediately taken to hospitals in Mumbai for medical treatment. • A video recorded by a passenger showed the speedboat circling the ferry before the crash, adding to the confusion and chaos on the ferry. • Officials Respond to the Incident • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has promised to provide a detailed report about the incident in the state legislature. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media and announced financial support for the victims. He said that ₹2 lakh would be given to the families of those who lost their lives, while ₹50,000 would be provided to those injured in the accident. • About Elephanta Island • The Neelkamal ferry was headed to Elephanta Island, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Elephanta Caves.
