Why is a stock's close price more important than a high or a low in chart analysis? Redoing. • Is the difference between stock prices for opening and closing of the trading day important? Let's suppose we have a few days where the market isn't really moving much - in such a scenario the closing price doesn't really mean much; its a close signalling indecision. However if the closing price tests new highs or reaches a resistance level not reached before then, that becomes interesting. Let's say we have a trending day; you start at the low, you close at the high so the next day you are likely to get a little bit of follow thru. As such it helps to validate a possible breakout or breakdown.
