Drain flies are small flies that are poor fliers. They are usually black, but may be brown. A fine hair covers their bodies, which leaves a powdery residue when crushed. These flies are commonly found near drains, sump pits or in bathrooms. • The flies lay eggs in a mass of 30 to 100 at a time and hatch in less than 48 hours! Dirty garbage disposal units, water -“p” traps in plumbing fixtures, or other locations with organic material are prime areas for infestation. • Although the flies will generally be seen near an area of infestation, they may make their way to other locations in your residence or property. • What Causes Drain Flies? • Drain flies – or moth flies – tend to breed and live in drains. They live off organic matter in drain traps, buildup on the side of piping, or slim that accumulates on the surface of water.
