PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. PCOS is characterized by irregular periods or absent periods, excess testosterone levels, and the formation of small cysts on the ovaries (polycystic ovaries). Other symptoms include acne, weight gain, hair loss, hirsutism and infertility. The cause of PCOS is not clear, but genetics and insulin resistance are believed to play a role. Treatment may include managing symptoms with hormonal pills such as Dianette, yasmin and lifestyle changes, and fertility treatments such as metformin, Clomiphene for those trying to conceive.
