This MK5 Golf GT came in running rough and had a P3008 fault code logged for the G40 camshaft sensor - signal out of range. I tested the cam sensor wiring and had a 5 volt reference, and a square wave hall sensor switching 5v down to 0v tested on a PICO oscilloscope, and a good earth. So the cam sensor is working ok. I checked the timing with the locking tools and found both cams to be advanced in relation to the crankshaft timing. This confirmed our suspicions of a timing problem. I stripped down the timing cover and found a stretched timing chain. The chain was so stretched that the tensioner allowed the chain to jump on the crank (the cams were in time to one another still).
