It is a live performance by Hulusi soloist Joanna Zenghui Qiu, accompanied by Jiang Li on keyboard. Titled The Affections of the Dai Nation, this piece is featured on the album The Art of the Chinese Xiao and Hulusi, released by ARC Music and Naxos Music. • Joanna Zenghui Qiu is a distinguished Chinese musician and the director of the UK Chinese Opera Association, with over 30 years of experience in Beijing Opera, Chinese classical, and folk music. She graduated from the Tianjin Opera School and China National Opera College and performed with the National Beijing Opera Company and Mei Lanfang Opera Troupe for nearly a decade. Since relocating to Britain in 1999, she has performed at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall, taught at SOAS, University of London, and led numerous educational workshops. Joanna has also collaborated with Western musicians, including Damon Albarn, and participated in world music festivals like WOMEX. • Joanna's work in theatre has been notable, serving as music director for acclaimed productions such as Wild Swans at the Young Vic and Yeh Shen with Yellow Earth Theatre. She has also contributed to productions like The Golden Dragon and Why the Lion Danced. A versatile instrumentalist, Joanna plays a wide array of Chinese instruments, including the Jinghu, Erhu, Hulusi, Guzheng, and Dizi, showcasing her deep expertise in traditional Chinese music. • The Hulusi, also known as the Hulu Xiao, is a traditional musical instrument of the ethnic minorities in Yunnan, China. Its origins can be traced back to the pre-Qin period. The Hulusi originated in Lianghe County, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, and is mainly popular among the Dai, Achang, Wa, Deang, and Blang ethnic groups in the Dehong and Lincang areas of Yunnan, known for its rich local cultural characteristics. It is often used to play folk melodies, such as mountain songs and farming tunes. • The Hulusi can be classified into high, medium, and low registers.
