5 September 2023, 18.00-19.30 • This is a recording of the first event within the Anthropocene Lecture Series by the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute: (1/6) 'What is the Anthropocene?' held on September 5 2023 at VU Amsterdam. • The Anthropocene is a new time period in which we humans currently live, although discussions are still going and are delivering sometimes fierce debates among scientists. What is the Anthropocene? Is it a new time unit for humanity on Earth? More than geological questions of time boundaries, Golden Spikes and how to measure those, it is apparent that most other academic branches have discussed and/or embraced the term, signifying that the Anthropocene forms a multi-disciplinary arena of global to local challenges and problems that relate to the 17 UN SDGs. • Chapters: • 0:00 - 7:23 Introduction by Philipp Pattberg • 07:24 - 40:01 Dr Sjoerd Kluiving: Towards a Theory of the Anthropocene - Review of overarching disciplines and research addressing planetary boundaries and social and humanitarian crises. • 40:02 - 01:25:32 Dr Kim Cohen: Coverage and Status of the Anthropocene - inclusivity of data and transdisciplinary issues in iso- chronically defining human-witnessed youngest earth time periods, includes 51:56-55:51 a short video of Ellis (   • Anthropocene: A Very Short Introducti...  ) • 01:25:32 - 01:43:47 Discussion and Questions • • In this lecture Dr Sjoerd Kluiving (VU Amsterdam) and Dr Kim Cohen (Universiteit Utrecht) explore the need for a theoretical foundation in addressing Anthropocene challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration and collective action and examine the evolving multidisciplinary understanding and data inclusivity in defining this epoch, highlighting its profound impact on Earth's ecosystems.
